Journalism without a moral position is impossible. Every journalist is a moralist. It’s absolutely unavoidable. (Marguerite Duras)

As an introduction, it is first necessary to define what a moralist and journalism are.

To begin, a moralist is a writer who proposes reflections on morality. The etymological meaning comes from the Latin words “mos”, “moris”: the uses and customs, human characters and ways of living - in short, the actions and behaviour of Men. The moralist does not have to be confused with “the moralizing” who gives moral lessons, contrary to the moralist who has a descriptive attitude and who deals, only secondarily, morality in the modern sense.

Second, journalism is a discipline which collects, verifies, reports and analyzes all the information regarding current events, trends, social or political issues and people.

Those who practice journalism are known as journalists. This profession consists on reporting, photographing or editing stories for media such as newspapers, magazines or television. It describes new events. Journalism plays a very important role in society.

Marguerite Duras’ quotation can be cited to show the role of journalism in a society. It underlines the influences of journalism on people thoughts as well as on their opinion. Thus, journalists have to be honest and they have to keep their integrity too.
